Why is eco friendly house painting important? The air that you and your family breathe inside your home contains vapors from paint, and they will remain inside your home for months and sometimes years!
“Volatile organic compound” or VOC is the name given to a substance that contains carbon and that evaporates (becomes a vapor) or “off-gases” at room temperature.
The National Library of Medicine describes reactions to VOCs as, “Long-term exposure to volatile organic compounds can cause damage to the liver, kidneys and central nervous system. Short-term exposure to volatile organic compounds can cause eye and respiratory tract irritation, headaches, dizziness, visual disorders, fatigue, loss of coordination, allergic skin reactions, nausea, and memory impairment.”
In a recent blog article, we hope we convinced our readers to walk away from oil paints. Now take a step further and commit more firmly to our planet’s health by using toxin free paints.
Low VOC paint is good, zero VOC is better, but toxin free is the best. Unfortunately even acrylic/latex paint labeled zero VOC typically include a range of biocides (also potentially hazardous chemicals that negatively affect your health).
We’ve all heard about low VOC paint and how it’s the healthier choice when renovating. But if you or your family member is chemically sensitive, or if there are small children, toxin free paint would be the best product to use.
Here’s how Arteriors’ new division of house painting stays green:
• No use of oil, lacquer or solvent base paints.
• All colors are custom mixed using our own zero VOC pigments.
• Paint used is primarily zero VOC acrylic.
• Option of toxin free paint such as Mythic and Bioshield.
