Stephanie Maria:

In all great dramas there are layers of narrative that weave together myth, dream and reality. I am painting an operatic world that is full of family history, political intrigue, fire, water, and the ambiguity of right and wrong. The content of my work has been described as allegorical with a twist.

Beyond the subject matter, I deliver this work with an expressive and colorful style. Line drawings borrowed from toile fabric patterns are combined with painterly images to create a depth of field and meaning.

I am inspired by artists such as; Anselm Kiefer, Brueghel, Thomas Hart Benton, Joan Snyder, El Greco, Velasquez and Louise Elisabeth Vigée Le Brun. The work of these master painters as well as my daily practice in the decorative arts has both informed and inspired me.
